DIOR BY JOHN GALLIANO: The History, the Saddle Bag & Where to Find It Vintage
Some bags whisper. The Dior Saddle never learned how.
It curves where a bag shouldn't, hangs off one shoulder like it's already bored of the party, and wears a dangling "D" like a piece of jewellery. When John Galliano sent it down the runway, the 2000s officially began. Then it disappeared. Then, in true diva fashion, it came back. And honestly? I've never related to an accessory more.
THE STORY
John Galliano was the creative director at Christian Dior through the late 90s and 2000s, and he was fashion's greatest showman. His Dior was theatrical, romantic, rebellious, and covered in logos at a time when everyone wanted to be seen.
In 1999, he debuted the Saddle bag on the runway for the Spring/Summer 2000 collection in Paris. It's often said the shape was inspired by Helmut Newton's photograph "Saddle I," although Galliano never confirmed it. Whatever the muse, the bag was an instant obsession. Paris Hilton carried a white leather version everywhere, and Carrie Bradshaw wore one in Season 3 of Sex and the City.
By 2007, the Saddle had quietly left the runway, and Galliano left Dior in 2011. Then, in Fall 2018, Maria Grazia Chiuri, the house's first female creative director, reissued the Saddle in a slightly larger size, and a whole new generation fell in love with it.
SIGNATURE PIECES
The Saddle bag: kidney-shaped, worn on the shoulder, with the swinging "D" charm.
The Dior logo canvas: the "Trotter" and "Oblique" monogram that Galliano made the star of the 2000s.
Newspaper and logo prints: the loud, playful side of 2000s Dior.
Bias-cut slip dresses: romantic, slinky evening pieces from the Galliano years.
FUN FACTS

WHO IT'S FOR
Y2K It Girl · Maximalist · Logo Lover
The Saddle is for the woman who wants her accessories to have an opinion. If you're a minimalist, look for a solid black or tan leather Saddle with no logo print. It's quieter but still unmistakable.
HOW I'D WEAR IT
For a weekend in the city, I'd lean into the 2000s denim moment, but grown up. Dark indigo denim from head to toe: a cropped fitted jean jacket and high-waisted bootcut jeans in the same wash. Then the Saddle tucked tight under the arm, red suede kitten heels peeking out from the hem and tinted brown sunglasses. Red heels with dark denim feel instantly vintage. The trick in 2026 is a dark, crisp wash and a high waist instead of low-rise.
HOW TO FIND IT VINTAGE
Search terms:
"vintage Dior Saddle bag"
"Dior Saddle bag Galliano"
"Dior Trotter Saddle"
"Dior Oblique Saddle vintage"
"Dior Saddle mini"
Tips:
This is one of the most copied bags in the world. Buy from sellers who authenticate, or pay for an independent authentication.
Check the "D" charm, hardware and stitching closely in the photos.
Look at the corners and underside for wear, and ask about the interior lining.
The reissue (2018 and later) is slightly larger than the original, so ask for measurements and the year.
