Thierry Mugler didn't make clothes.
He made entrances.
Thierry Mugler 1988 Les Infernales Runway Red Blazer 😍😍😍
Shoulders that could cut glass. Waists cinched into an hourglass. Shows staged like opera, complete with an audience that paid for tickets. Mugler dressed women like superheroines who'd read Vogue, and decades later, the biggest stars in the world still raid his archive when they want to stop traffic. If Escada was colour with confidence, Mugler was architecture with attitude.
THE STORY
Thierry Mugler was born in Strasbourg, France, in December 1948. As a young teenager he joined the ballet company of the Opéra du Rhin, then studied at the School of Decorative Arts, and at 20 he moved to Paris.
In 1973 he created a label called Café de Paris, and in 1974 he founded Thierry Mugler. His look became the definition of power dressing: exaggerated shoulders, sculpted waists and a fearless, theatrical glamour. In 1984 he held the first public fashion show in Europe to celebrate the label's tenth anniversary, and in 1995 he marked its twentieth with a show at the Cirque d'Hiver in Paris.
In 1992 he launched the perfume Angel with Clarins, which changed the fragrance world. Clarins took control of the company in 1997, and Mugler stepped away from fashion in the early 2000s. In 2019, he came out of retirement to create Kim Kardashian's Met Gala look, the same year Cardi B wore an archival 1995 Mugler piece to the Grammys. He died in January 2022, aged 73.

WHO IT'S FOR
Power Dresser · Maximalist · Evening Glamour
Mugler is for the woman who wants to look unstoppable. If you're a minimalist, choose one sculpted black blazer and wear it with simple trousers. The shape does all the talking.
HOW I'D WEAR IT
(Opening Night)
For an opening night at the theatre, I'd go full Mugler sculpture, but keep it sleek. A cobalt blue crepe blazer dress with strong shoulders and a cinched waist, sheer black tights and silver metallic pointed ankle boots. Then a sculptural silver cuff, a small silver box clutch and a red lip. One colour, one metal, and a silhouette that does the rest. Mugler taught me that the shape is the statement.
HOW TO FIND IT VINTAGE
Search terms:
"vintage Thierry Mugler blazer"
"Thierry Mugler power suit 80s"
"vintage Mugler jacket"
"Thierry Mugler skirt suit vintage"
"vintage Mugler corset"
Tips:
Shoulders are big and waists are tiny. Always ask for exact measurements, especially waist and shoulder width.
Look for "Thierry Mugler Paris" on the label; later pieces under the revived brand simply say "Mugler."
Check shoulder pads, linings and zips, which can be fragile on 80s and 90s pieces.
