GUCCI BY TOM FORD: The History, Signature Pieces & Where to Find It Vintage

There was Gucci before Tom Ford.

And then there was Gucci after.

Before, it was a famous name in trouble. After, it was velvet hip-huggers, satin shirts unbuttoned to the navel, and a kind of sex appeal so polished it felt dangerous. Tom Ford didn't just save a fashion house. He made seduction look expensive. I'm not trying to be anyone's femme fatale, but I am taking notes.

THE STORY

Gucci was founded in Florence in 1921 by Guccio Gucci, and for decades it stood for Italian leather and luxury. By the early 90s, though, the house was struggling, and it was said to be close to bankruptcy.

Tom Ford, a young American designer on the Gucci team, was named creative director in 1994. His Fall/Winter 1995 collection changed everything: velvet hip-hugging trousers, satin shirts unbuttoned low, sleek and confident tailoring. It was the opposite of the conservative Gucci people knew. Sales skyrocketed, rising about 90% between 1995 and 1996.

Ford spent the next decade making Gucci the sexiest name in fashion, and in 1999 he also took on Yves Saint Laurent after it was acquired. He left Gucci in 2004 and went on to launch his own label.

SIGNATURE PIECES

  • The velvet suit: slim, jewel-toned and glamorous.

  • Satin shirts: open at the neck, worn with confidence.

  • The horsebit: gold hardware on loafers, bags and belts.

  • Sleek jersey dresses: body-skimming, often with cut-outs or a hip-level "G" buckle.

  • The G logo belt and bamboo-handle bags: the polished accessories of the era.

WHO IT'S FOR

Power Dresser · 90s Supermodel · Evening Glamour

Tom Ford's Gucci is for the woman who wants to feel powerful and magnetic. If you prefer quiet luxury, start with the horsebit loafers or a plain black jersey dress. If you love drama, go jewel-tone velvet.

HOW I'D WEAR IT

For a cocktail party, I'd channel Tom Ford's velvet with a full plum velvet suit: a fitted blazer and floor-sweeping flares. Underneath, an ivory satin shirt unbuttoned at the collar. Then gold platform sandals, a jade green bamboo-handle bag and silver jewellery, because Tom Ford's Gucci loved a cool metal. Plum and jade feel rich and unexpected. The secret to Tom Ford's Gucci is that sex appeal comes from fabric and fit, not from showing more skin.

Tips:

  • Gucci is often copied. Buy from sellers who authenticate, or have it authenticated yourself.
