ROBERTO CAVALLI: The History, the Animal Print & Where to Find It Vintage
Roberto Cavalli never asked if it was too much. He asked if it was enough.
Leopard. Zebra. Python. Chiffon that floats. Denim that hugs. Necklines that dare. Cavalli didn't design clothes for women who wanted to blend in. He designed for women who wanted the whole room to turn. And in the 2000s, when everyone from rock stars to supermodels wanted to look wild and expensive, he was the name on the label.

THE STORY
Roberto Cavalli came from humble beginnings in Florence. His grandfather, Giuseppe Rossi, was a celebrated painter, and Cavalli studied textile printing at Florence's State Institute of Art.
He developed a technique for printing on leather and suede, and it won him commissions from Hermès and Pierre Cardin. In 1970, he presented his first collection at the Salon du Prêt-à-Porter in Paris. Two years later, he opened his first boutique, Limbo, in Saint-Tropez, where Brigitte Bardot and Sophia Loren were among the shoppers.
In the 90s, his sandblasted, stretchy denim made him a household name, and Naomi Campbell wore it on his 1993 runway. Then came the animal prints and the unapologetic glamour that defined the 2000s. Roberto Cavalli died in April 2024, aged 83, but his name is still shorthand for wild luxury.

WHO IT'S FOR
Maximalist · Party Girl · Y2K Glam
Cavalli is for the woman who isn't afraid of being looked at. If you're a minimalist, choose one animal print piece, like a silk scarf or a leopard blouse, and wear it with black.
HOW I'D WEAR IT
On a vacation evening, I'd wear the animal print on the bottom and let it move. A leopard print silk maxi skirt with an emerald silk wrap blouse knotted at the waist, then emerald strappy block-heel sandals and a gold chain mini bag. Leopard and emerald is unexpected but so glamorous, especially with gold everywhere. The 2000s wore print head to toe; I'd wear it like a silk scarf come to life.

Tips:
"Roberto Cavalli" was the main line and "Just Cavalli" the younger, lower-priced line. Both are fun to collect.
Italian sizing runs small, and denim from the 2000s was often low-rise. Ask for measurements, including the rise.
Chiffon snags easily. Ask about pulls and stains.
Check that labels and care tags are present.
