HERVÉ LÉGER: The History, the Bandage Dress & Where to Find It Vintage
Let's be honest. Some dresses flatter you. The Hervé Léger bandage dress holds you, sculpts you, and dares you to walk into the room like you own the building.
It's not shy. It was never meant to be. It's architecture you can wear, stitched band by band, and in the 90s it taught a whole generation what confidence looks like from across the street.

THE STORY
Hervé Léger was a French designer who worked for some of the great houses, including Chanel, Fendi, Chloé, Diane von Furstenberg and Lanvin. A few years before his big moment, he noticed discarded stretchy elastic bands at a clothing factory. He kept thinking about them.
Around 1992, he introduced the bandage dress. Elastic bands were wrapped around the body and sewn horizontally, shaping the figure the way a corset or girdle would. Each dress was sewn by hand and could take anywhere from 16 hours to two weeks to finish.
In 1998, the company was bought by BCBG Max Azria, and by 1999 the designer had left the house that carried his name. In 2000 he changed his name to Hervé Leroux and opened a small atelier in Paris.
The dress, however, refused to disappear. Around 2007 and 2008, vintage bandage dresses came roaring back, worn by stars like Victoria Beckham and Keira Knightley, and BCBG relaunched the brand with a runway show in 2008.

WHO IT'S FOR 90s Supermodel · Party Girl · Body Confident Hervé Léger is for the woman who wants to feel powerful in her body. If the full dress feels like too much, start with a bandage skirt and an oversized blazer. That balance is very chic.
HOW I'D WEAR IT
Date night is what the bandage dress was made for. A ruby red bandage dress with a sculpted sweetheart neckline, a cropped black leather jacket over my shoulders and strappy gold stilettos. Then the twist: a fuchsia satin mini bag. Red and pink together is bold, romantic and very confident, and the leather keeps it from feeling too sweet. Slick the hair back, and let the dress do the rest.
HOW TO FIND IT VINTAGE
Search terms:
"vintage Herve Leger bandage dress"
"Herve Leger Paris vintage"
"90s Herve Leger dress"
"Herve Leger bandage skirt"
"vintage bandage dress 90s"
Tips:
Many sellers drop the accent, so search without it.
Original 90s pieces are rare and expensive. Later BCBG-era pieces are much more common, so read the label and ask about the year.
Look closely at the bands for snags, pulled threads or loose stitching.
Bandage dresses run close to the body. Ask for exact measurements, and check that the zip works smoothly.
