IT WAS ALWAYS FASHION: Why I'm Building The Style Archive From My Diary

I used to think I loved travel.

And I do. The first glimpse of a new city, the light on the water, the feeling of finally stretching past the edges of my everyday life. But if I'm being completely honest with myself, the daydream never started with the destination.

It started with the outfit.

What am I going to wear? Which colours will I pack? How am I going to feel walking down that street, sitting at that café, stepping off that plane? Before I ever booked a room, I had already lived the whole trip in my head, one look at a time.

I didn't see it for what it was. Not then.

THE CLUES WERE EVERYWHERE Let me take you back to high school prom.

I was obsessed with the green Versace dress Jennifer Lopez wore to the 2000 Grammys. You know the one. The plunge, the jungle print, the way the silk chiffon floated like it had its own breeze. Every girl I knew had seen it. I wanted to feel it.

So I did something a little bold for a teenager. I found a seamstress on Kijiji. I hunted down a fabric that was as close to that print as I could find. And together, we made my version: tailored to my body, very much age-appropriate, and very much inspired by J.Lo.

I was crowned Best Dressed that night.

Prom night, in my J.Lo-inspired dress. Blurry, and I wouldn't change a thing.

Looking at those blurry photos now, I have to laugh. Who did I think I was?

Honestly? Exactly who I was meant to be.

That girl had delusion, in the best way. She had boldness. She had a sense of wonder that didn't wait for permission or a budget or a perfect plan. And somewhere along the way, between being sensible and being busy, I lost her.

This archive is how I'm finding her again.

The clues were there from the very beginning.

They were there in the thousands of hours I spent walking through malls, not always buying, just looking. In every sample sale I've ever lined up for. In the hours, and I mean hours, I spent scrolling for looks. Pinterest became my happy place, not because it was pretty (although it is), but because it let me see a feeling before I could explain it. A silhouette. A colour story. A woman walking through a city like she belonged there.

I booked a colour assessment because I wanted to know, for once and for all, which colours actually made me come alive. Not which colours were trending. Mine.

And I spent money. So much money. On pieces I loved for a weekend. On pieces that were almost right. On pieces that belonged to someone I was trying to be, instead of the woman I already was.

Every one of those moments was a clue. I just didn't have the full sentence yet.

THE MOMENT IT CLICKED What started in one direction came full circle, right back to where it began. It was always fashion.

For years I treated it as a guilty pleasure. This is on sale. This looks great. Add to cart. But it was never that simple, and I was too timid to see it. Every fashion house has a message. Every collection is trying to make you feel something. When you understand that, getting dressed stops being shopping and starts being storytelling. You can elevate your concept of self. You can express who you are through every single choice.

Not fashion as in trends. Not fashion as in rules. Fashion as in the quiet, daily act of deciding how I want to show up and what I want my presence to say before I say a single word.

And somewhere along the way, I realised something freeing: nobody needs to hand me permission to do this. I get to choose. I get to build a body of work around the thing that has been lighting me up all along.

I don't need to be a famous name, a brand or a fashion house to appreciate the art and pay homage to it. I just need to pay attention, and to share what I find.

So here I am. Building it.

I'M NOT AN EXPERT. I'M ON A QUEST. Let me be clear about who I am in this story. I'm not a fashion historian. I'm not a stylist with a client list. I'm a woman refining her personal style, out loud, one discovery at a time.

And here's what surprised me most. The deeper I dig into the stories behind the great fashion houses, the more human they become.

A model who couldn't find the dress she wanted, so she bought a loom and made it herself. A nine-year-old boy who made his first pair of shoes and decided that was his life. A designer who spotted a pile of discarded elastic bands on a factory floor and saw a dress. A brother and sister, a husband and wife, a granddaughter with a sketch for a little bag.

Regular people. Following their hearts. Betting on their taste.

That's exactly what I'm trying to do here.

WHAT THE STYLE ARCHIVE IS The Style Archive is my living library of fashion houses, from forgotten vintage labels to the new names everyone should know.

Every entry tells the story: who started it, what they believed, and the pieces that made them unforgettable. Then I bring it home. Who it's for. How I'd wear it now. Exactly what to search for when you're hunting for it vintage.

My hope is to highlight these designers' stories, amplify their messages, and bring a little resurgence back to their pieces. So many beautiful garments are sitting in closets and on resale sites, waiting for someone to fall in love with them again.

WHAT "REFINING MY PERSONAL STYLE" REALLY MEANS It's a phrase I use a lot, so let me tell you what it means to me.

Refinement isn't about buying more. It's about choosing better. It's knowing my colours, so I stop guessing. It's knowing my silhouettes, so I stop fighting my body. It's knowing my story, so every piece I bring home has a reason to be there.

It's learning the difference between "that's beautiful" and "that's me."

There is so much noise. So many options, so many trends, so many voices telling you what you need this season. How do you know what's for you? You don't find the answer in a shopping cart. You find it by paying attention: to what you keep saving, to what makes you stand a little taller, to the women and the houses you can't stop thinking about.

THIS IS FOR YOU IF… You know you want your clothes to speak, but you're not sure what they should say yet.

You've spent money chasing a feeling and want to finally understand it.

You're craving a place to browse, reflect, and pick out the pieces of the story that feel like yours.

I'll be right here, doing the same.

Style is where I practise being brave first: wearing the colour, taking up the space, trusting my own eye. If you're ready to move on the bigger things in your life too, that's what my MOVE sessions are for.

XOXO,

Emsy 💕
