VALENTINO: The History, Valentino Red & Where to Find It Vintage · The Style Archive

There is red. And then there is Valentino red.

Valentino Red Floral Silk Ruffled Belted Long Dress Gown

It isn't loud for the sake of it. It's the red of a woman who has nothing to prove and everything to say. For nearly half a century, Valentino Garavani made beauty his entire point of view: bows, ruffles, capes and that one unmistakable colour. In a world that keeps telling us to be practical, Valentino reminds me that loveliness is a serious business.

THE STORY

Valentino Garavani was born in 1932 in Voghera, in northern Italy. At 17, he left for Paris to study fashion, then trained at the houses of Jean Dessès and Guy Laroche. In 1959 he returned to Rome, and in 1960 he founded his house there with Giancarlo Giammetti, his longtime partner in life and business.

In 1962 he presented his first collection in Florence, already marked by his signature red. In 1964 he met Jackie Kennedy, a turning point for his career, and in 1968 she married Aristotle Onassis in one of his ivory creations. For decades he dressed the most elegant women in the world, and in 2006 he received the Légion d'honneur in Paris.

Valentino retired in January 2008, and the house continued under new creative directors. He died in January 2026, aged 93, leaving behind a legacy of romance, elegance and red.

SIGNATURE PIECES

  • Valentino red gowns: the house signature, worn on red carpets for decades.

  • Bows: oversized, sculptural and impossibly romantic.

  • Ruffles and capes: movement and drama in every silhouette.

  • Ivory and lace: the bridal and evening side of the house.

  • Valentino Boutique and Valentino Roma: the more accessible lines, great for vintage hunting.

WHO IT'S FOR

Romantic · Evening Glamour · Quiet Luxury

Valentino is for the woman who believes elegance never goes out of style. If red feels like too much, start with a Valentino bow detail or an ivory lace blouse.

HOW I'D WEAR IT

(Opera Night)

For a night at the opera, I'd go head to toe in Valentino red, because tonal dressing is the most elegant kind of drama. A red silk faille midi dress with an oversized bow at the shoulder and a soft cape at the back, sheer red tights and red satin pumps. Then the twist: a hot pink satin minaudière, because red and pink together is the most romantic colour block there is. Ruby drop earrings and a French twist, and I'm ready for the curtain.

HOW TO FIND IT VINTAGE

Search terms:

  • "vintage Valentino red dress"

  • "Valentino Garavani vintage gown"

  • "vintage Valentino bow dress"

  • "Valentino Boutique vintage"

  • "Valentino Roma vintage"

  • "vintage Valentino lace blouse"

Tips:

  • "Valentino Garavani" and "Valentino Boutique" labels are the classic vintage finds; "Valentino Roma" was a more affordable line.

  • Silk faille and taffeta can crack along folds. Ask for photos of the creases.

  • Check bows and ruffles for flattening or loose stitching.

  • Italian sizing runs small. Always ask for measurements.
