MOSCHINO CHEAP AND CHIC: The History, Signature Pieces & Where to Find It Vintage
Fashion doesn't always have to take itself so seriously. Moschino Cheap and Chic understood that beautifully. A little irreverence, a little whimsy, and a reminder that personal style should be as much about pleasure as it is about polish.

Every time I discover a vintage Moschino piece, it feels like a wink from fashion history. A reminder to wear the beautiful thing, embrace the unexpected, and never take yourself too seriously.
THE STORY
Franco Moschino was born in 1950 in Abbiategrasso, near Milan. He studied at Milan's Accademia di Belle Arti, wanting to be an artist, and paid his way by drawing fashion illustrations. From 1971 he sketched publicity campaigns for Italian ready-to-wear houses, including work for Gianni Versace's collections.
After designing for the Italian label Cadette, he founded his own company in 1983 and launched Moschino Couture. In 1988 he introduced Cheap and Chic, a lower-priced line that kept all of the wit: tailored jackets and dresses with surprising details, playful prints and slogans that poked fun at the fashion industry itself.
Franco Moschino died in 1994, aged 44. Rossella Jardini, who had worked beside him since 1981, carried the house forward. Later, Jeremy Scott led Moschino from 2013 to 2023 and brought the humour roaring back.
SIGNATURE PIECES
The witty blazer: classic tailoring with an unexpected twist, from novelty buttons to printed linings.
Slogan pieces: words printed or embroidered right onto the clothes.
Polka dots and hearts: playful motifs that turned up again and again.
Statement prints: bold, graphic and impossible to ignore.
FUN FACTS
Franco Moschino trained as an artist before fashion found him.
Before his own label, he illustrated campaigns, including work for Gianni Versace.
He once designed a dinner suit with a knife and fork appliquéd on the bodice, and blazers with windmill buttons.
The press nicknamed him "Mr. Funny Court Jester."
Cheap and Chic launched in 1988 alongside a faux-fur line called "For Fun."
WHO IT'S FOR
Maximalist · Playful Dresser · Fashion Lover with a Sense of Humour
Moschino is for the woman who believes clothes should spark joy and conversation. If you're a minimalist, look for its solid-colour tailoring with one witty detail, like the buttons, and let that be your statement.
HOW I'D WEAR IT
Moschino is made for brunch, because brunch is allowed to be fun. A canary yellow cropped blazer with oversized gold heart buttons over a crisp white tee, with a red-and-white gingham full midi skirt that swishes when I walk. Then white T-bar block heels, a little red heart-shaped bag and a gold charm bracelet. It's sunshine, picnic and Milan all at once. The joke is the bag; the tailoring keeps it chic.
